He is interested in various development issues affecting women entrepreneurship and their associations. He is a social worker (sociologist) by profession.

He has attended various trainings and workshops in the areas of women entrepreneurship development, training of trainers in Gender in Leadership and Decision-Making, Cooperative Management and Organization, and in different Gender and Health related issues. Specifically he has attended a training programme, "Empowerment of Women Through Enterprises" in Hyderabad, India.

Ermias G/Mariam has worked as a Regional Manager for Handicrafts and Small-Scale Industries Development Agency (HASIDA) from 1980 to 1985. He has also worked as Industrial Labour Relations Officer in the Ministry of Industry from 1986-1995. He has also worked with the capacity of a Team Leader for Industrial Regulation and Trade Promotion and Organization from 1995-1999. From year 2000 till now he is working with the Ministry of Trade and Industry in the Department of Women's Affairs as Women Entrepreneurship Development Senior Expert.

Ermias together with other Team Mates has participated in various studies. Currently he is participating as a Gender Expert in a research, "Factors Affecting Women Entrepreneurs in Micro and Small Enterprises" in Ethiopia with Zewdie and Associates P.L.C.
